What are you listening to? Water? A stage coach? A herd of buffalo? In the late 1980s we were looking for a new approach to nature walks. We started listening to trees using flat contact microphones. Trees are natural resonators. Even in a light breeze, the movement of every leaf, twig or branch reverberates down through the trunk to create a riot of bubbling music. A tree's size and species will vary the sound significantly. It is extraordinary to think that all this is going on around us as we take a quiet walk through the park. « less
